Find your patch of shade: beach umbrella or cabana?

By Amanda Fagan

A beautiful umbrella has a way of making a patch of sand feel like your own. A stripe against the blue, a towel beneath it, somewhere to pause between swims.

But choosing beach shade is about more than the picture. Think about who’s coming, how far you’ll carry it and the space you want once you arrive.

If you’re considering an umbrella from Sunday Supply Co. or SunnyLife, compare the particular model before choosing: canopy size, packed weight and the way it secures all matter.

An umbrella may suit a smaller setup. A cabana may suit a group spreading out for the day. The details of the model matter more than the name on the bag.

Picture everyone under it

Start with the people and belongings you want to shade. Two upright chairs need a different arrangement from a family sitting on a mat. Add a cooler and beach bags, and your patch of sand grows quickly.

Canopy dimensions help you compare products, but they aren’t a promise of the usable shade throughout the day. The sun moves, and the shadow moves with it. Check whether the people sitting underneath will fit comfortably in that shaded space.

Umbrella or cabana: the practical differences

Question Beach umbrella Beach cabana
What sort of setup? Often suits a smaller seated area; sizes vary Often offers a broader area for a group; check dimensions
What will I carry? Compare pole length, weight and carry bag Compare the full packed kit, including its supports
How does it secure? Follow the model’s pole and anchoring instructions Follow the model’s anchoring or sandbag instructions
How much room is needed? Allow for the canopy and any accessories Allow for the canopy, legs and any anchoring lines

There’s no universal winner. A larger canopy is only useful if it suits the beach, the conditions and the person carrying it.

Give the setup a trial run

Before the first outing, open your shade at home according to the instructions. Check what’s included, what needs assembling and whether you need any separate accessories.

It’s far easier to learn the sequence before you’re balancing bags and looking for a spot on a busy beach.

We live on the coast, where the wind can pick up, so my sand anchor always comes with me. It’s one of those practical little extras I make room for alongside the lovely things.

Follow the manufacturer’s anchoring and weather guidance every time. An umbrella or cabana isn’t automatically safe in strong wind; pack it down if conditions become unsuitable. Keep your setup attended.

Then comes the lovely part: colour

A stripe can become the centre of the whole setup. Or choose quiet shade and let a patterned towel bring the colour.

You don’t have to start again. Pick something that works with the pieces you already take to the beach. If Sunday Supply Co. or SunnyLife is on your umbrella shortlist, look at the colours alongside a Hommey towel or your own favourite.

A bag from Aloha Brands or Eau can be another piece of the picture. Let the colours sit happily together without feeling obliged to buy a matching set. Explore the Boatshed7 Style Edits for inspiration, then compare the actual options in our towel and bag collections.

Shade is one part of sun protection

Check the UV information supplied for the particular product. A fabric rating doesn’t mean every part of your body will remain shaded, and reflected UV can still reach you.

SunSmart recommends using shade alongside covering clothing, a protective hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Whether your sunscreen is from We Are Feel Good Inc., Whip or another brand, check the label and follow its directions. Keep those essentials close, even under a lovely canopy.
