Pack a little summer: your Australian beach packing checklist
By Amanda Fagan
A striped towel over your shoulder. Something cold in the cooler. That first glimpse of blue at the end of the beach track.
A lovely beach day starts before your feet reach the sand. A little thought about what you take means less rummaging, fewer trips back to the car and more time to enjoy being there.
Start with the essentials, then add what suits the day. You don’t need to take everything you own—or buy everything new.
What always goes in my bag
My water bottle and a good book always come with me. Sometimes I’ll add a portable speaker for a little music and a relaxed beach mood. The essentials are simple; the lovely part is having time to enjoy them.
If you bring a speaker, keep the volume low and follow any local rules. Leave room for everyone else to enjoy the sound of the sea, too.
The beach bag checklist
- For the sun: sunscreen, a protective hat, sunglasses, covering clothing and a shade plan.
- For the swim: swimmers, a towel and a change of clothes.
- For the afternoon: drinking water, food and a cooler if needed.
- For your patch of sand: a chair or mat, plus portable shade if you’re bringing your own.
- For the little things: keys, phone, a separate pouch and a bag for wet belongings.
- For heading home: a rubbish bag and somewhere to keep damp gear apart from dry clothes.
Before leaving, check the weather and local beach conditions. For sun protection advice, use SunSmart’s guidance; shade works alongside clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Pack for the day you’re actually having
Just a quick dip? Keep the load small: towel, sun protection, water and dry clothes. When looking at bags from Aloha Brands or Eau, think about the things you actually carry. Will your towel fit? Is there a useful place for the little things? Browse our beach bags with your own short list in mind.
Staying for lunch? Add food, a cooler and a comfortable place to sit. If the walk is long, consider the combined weight of your chair, shade and full bag—not just each item on its own.
Taking the family? Count towels and water bottles before you count toys. Then choose a few things everyone will use. For the playful side of a beach day, look at SunnyLife or explore Little Beach Explorers for ideas, checking the age guidance on each product.
A little colour goes a long way
Your beach setup can feel considered without everything matching. Start with something you already love: a favourite towel, a striped umbrella or the colour of your chair.
Let that guide the next piece. A patterned towel can sit beautifully beside plain shade; a soft green bag can bring together sandy neutrals. There’s room for a much-loved old favourite in the picture, too.
If you’re ready for fresh inspiration, browse the Style Edits from the Boatshed7 homepage. Considering a Hommey towel? Choose the colour you love, then check the size, fabric and care details. Explore our beach towels to find the piece that brings your own setup together.
Don’t bury the sunscreen
Make sun protection easy to reach, rather than something you have to unpack the whole bag to find. Whether you choose We Are Feel Good Inc. or Whip, check the product’s label and directions, with SunSmart’s advice as your guide. A lovely beach bag needs useful things inside it.
Keep the useful things within reach
Pack the heavy things first and keep what you’ll need on arrival near the top. Give keys and your phone their own place, away from wet swimmers. An ordinary pouch keeps things together; only rely on waterproof protection if that’s what the product is designed to provide.
One last check: can you carry the whole load comfortably from the car? If not, leave something behind or share the carrying. The best-packed bag is the one that helps you enjoy the day.
